Interlinked: Blade Runner RPG Solo Campaign - Session 2: Part 1: Wake Up!

Welcome back to Interlinked, A Blade Runner RPG Solo campaign. In the last session Detective Jay had a polite discussion with Mrs. Wyman. She claimed Dminitry Koslovski was Mr. Wymans biggest enemy. Detective Jay thinks she is onto something there...

If you haven't caught up with the first couple of sessions, make sure to give it a read here.

Now let's play!

Dimitry Koslovski, council member of the Greater LA municipal area, LA Representative to the United Nations, and a major shareholder in the Wallace Corporation. In other words, untouchable. I put in a quick call to Deputy Chief Holden, explaining the conversation with Mrs. Wyman.

“Detective Jay, be very careful. The whole RepDept is between a wall and a hard place here. Both Mr. Koslovski and Mr. Wyman could end our collective careers. Proceed with extreme caution and tread lightly. Mr. Koslovski isn’t to be trifled with.”

Fantastic I think as I take the spinner to the City Hall in Sector 5. I call ahead to Mr. Koslovski’s office to indicate my need to speak with him. I get no response back.

Alright, I have no idea how this scene will go so I’ll roll on the Plot Unfolding Machine. I’ll roll on the scene prompt table. I get Problem or challenge. I roll on the Challenge table and get the Presence of Divine, magic, or technology. Very interesting. Blade Runner doesn’t have magic in the traditional sense but there are magical things I’d say… Let’s see how it plays out.

Landing at City Hall I’m quickly ushered into a receiving room. Nothing fancy, just a bland and forgettable bureaucratic room I’ve seen a hundred times. After waiting several minutes a person enters. I immediately clock them as a replicant. It’s their bearing and perfect posture. A male model. They look… somehow familiar.

“Hello Detective Jay,” this replicant says. “Mr. Koslovski is busy at the moment but I’d be happy to answer your questions until he is available.”

I know this person. From my dreams. “Excuse me. Who are you? Have we met before?”

The replicant smiles, “No Detective, I don’t think we’ve met before. I’ll see if Mr Koslovski is available.”

This unknown replicant walks out. It must be the person from my dreams! The one with the child, the one that makes me feel hopeful. What is he doing here? Confusion racks me, taking control. I’ll need to get back to baseline soon or risk my mental state.

The door opens again and two large men walk in. They are wearing perfectly fitted suits but I can tell from their demeanor that these two are security at best, hired muscle at worst.

Hired muscle are always easy to spot.

A gruff voice, “Mr. Koslovski will not be speaking with you, Detective. Now, we must insist you leave city hall premises before you are removed.

“Gentlemen. You do realise you are interfering with a Blade Runner investigation. I must caution you that any further interference will be considered a crime and I am within my powers to arrest you, by force if needed.”

Roll Empathy (A a D12), and Manipulation (B a D10) - Two Successes - Critical Success

I can see the panic in the eyes of the two thugs. Not many have the chance to tangle with a Blade Runner and tell the tale. Our reputation is a dark one but well-earned.

“I ummm… We don’t want any trouble Detective. Look we were just told to come out here and shoo you away. I don’t know if Mr. Koslovski is around.”

I don’t have time for this. With these two sufficiently cowed, I shove past them and into the door behind them. The hallways have the same stale look about them. Signs on the walls point the way to the Councilmember's office. Thank you for bureaucratic efficiency.

How is Mr. Koslovski going to respond to having a Blade Runner barge into his office? Not well I imagine but let’s bring up the Scene Unfolding Machine. I’ll roll 2 D20s on the Behavior table and take the higher one. 17 and 6. OK, so 17 is Trigger an alarm, and give notice to others.

I burst into the councilmember’s office, “Mr. Koslovksi, I need to ask you a few questions!” Mr. Koslovski is already on his feet. Then I hear the alarm blaring. Damnit, he must have hit some sort of panic button.

“You stay away from me you fucking skin job! I got four private security officers heading here right now. If you don’t leave they will detain you and you’ll probably be stripped of your badge. What’s the retirement policy for replicant Blade Runners? Oh, that’s right. It’s Retirement. Now scram before I choose not to take this up with Deputy Chief Holden and shoot you right here, right now.”

I have seconds to act. Threatening the life of a Blade Runner is a crime in and of itself. Getting into a gunfight in the middle of city hall probably isn’t what Holden wanted me to do when he said to be careful.

God damn it, this will probably end up getting me demoted but here we go.

I move fast, jumping over Mr. Koslovski’s desk. I want to grab him, detain him and drag him back to LAPD HQ for interrogation. I can’t hesitate now.

Roll Strength (B a D10), and hand-to-hand (B a D10) - One Success

Mr. Koslovski is shocked, I can see that on his face. He isn’t used to people fighting back. He normally gets his way. Well, not today. Using my speed I launch myself over the desk, grabbing him in the same smooth motion. I get around him, grab an arm, and force his head down onto his desk.

Mr. Koslovski is used to getting his way.

Just at the same time those same two thugs rush into the room. They stop when they see me detaining Mr. Koslovksi.

“Well what are you waiting for, you goddamn meat brains!” he yells at them. “Get this fucking skin job off of me and stomp her into the ground.”

“Gentlemen, Mr. Koslovski is under arrest for attempting to disrupt a Blade Runner investigation and threatening physical harm against a Blade Runner.” I say as calmly as I can. “Interference in this arrest is also considered a crime. Right now you two haven’t broken any laws, and if you’d like to keep it that way, please remove yourself from the doorway and allow me to take Mr. Koslovski to my vehicle.”

Mr. Koslovski attempts to say something but I twist his arm a bit harder and he loses his voice.

“Now gentlemen, what is it going to be?”

Roll Empathy (A a D12), and Manipulation (B a D10) - No successes - A failure

They both reach into their suits and pull out guns. Damnit. Now it’s going to get messy. The thug who I spoke with earlier speaks up.

“No disrespect Detective but things may have gotten out of hand here. Please remove your hands from Mr. Koslovski and we can all talk about this. Otherwise, things may get violent and we don’t want that do we?”

What do I do? What can I do? If I call backup it won’t get here in time. I could let Mr. Koslovski go but I’m sure to catch a bullet in the back as I leave. No the only way out is with him in custody. I put him up in a standing position. He’s fully between me and the thugs. Thankfully his desk job means he blocks the thug's view of me almost completely.

I see the panic in their eyes as they realise they won’t be able to get a clean shot of me without risking their boss. Now it’s time. I sidestep, step by step so I can get a clear run of the door. This part will be tricky. I’m hoping these thugs are more afraid of hurting their boss than hurting me.

I kick Mr. Koslovski in the back of the knee and he pitches forward. I use his momentum to charge straight at the two thugs.
